Banks around here take customer wrapped rolls and customers bring them in all the time. I am still pulling silver out of the rolls on a regular basis, just not like it was 2 years ago when I was finding 40% Kennedys every week. I agree, the key is to buy just what the teller has in her drawer, not to order boxes.
So far in June and July I have found in rolls 44 silver dimes, 5 Franklins Halves, 4 1964 Kennedys, 4 40% Kennedys and a beautiful 1977s proof Kennedy. I also received a 1964 quarter in change at OSH the other day so I asked the check out person if I could buy $5 in quarters from her and found 3 more in the $5 worth she gave me. Made more profit on the quarters than I spent for the sprinkler head.

Just out of curiosity is the fed actively removing old silver coins before sending boxes to banks or have they just pretty much all been pillaged by then?

The feds aren't the ones rolling and delivering, it's companys such as Brinks. Brinks is not in the business to cull silver, they make plenty of money doing just what they do. Until someone offers solid proof and not just heresay, lol. When I listen to LED ZEPPELIN...so do my neighbors...

But I tend to agree with you...I'm sure many tellers just grab rolls when asked and don't put much effort into whether they are customer-wrapped or not. Almost true by me. Only now most banks will take them but send them somewhere for counting and there is a charge for that. Extra charge for opening rolls too. If I bring in a bag of coins, there is a charge if over $100. I'm starting to wonder when banks will have a charge for entering the front door.  |

Having been a roll hunter since 1980, and steadily since 2007, I have multiple accounts and have ordered hundreds of boxes of dimes, quarters and halves. Never once a fee to order, never a fee to return. All my banks accept rolled coin, and it's easy for me to pick up $1,000+ customer dimes between 2-3 banks, twice a month. At one CU that I dump at, I was returning $500 bags of loose dimes and received cash immediately. I never count and have never had a problem with the couriers. Your results may differ.

I just started collecting coins and at first I would just get a roll of each denomination. The second time I did this I got 13 silver dimes in that roll. I now buy cases of each denomination, except one dollar and two dollar coins. I haven't found one silver amonst them. I have read on this thread that it may be best not to buy cases, does anyone differ in that opinion? If so how much per bank has worked best?

I've heard that in Canada certain coins are being pulled from circulation by the government, (nickel, silver, etc), and afaik that is not being done in the US. Some roll hunters my search $30,000 a week in halves, another hunter searches $10 a week. Based on my experience, at least with dime hunting, my averages between boxed dimes and customer rolls are very close. Last year I searched maybe $20,000+ in dimes. It may not be the case any longer, but when I started roll hunting, we were ramping up toward the great influx of coins that caused the scarcity of 2009 coins. Most of the time they had already been scraped for wheat pennies and silver. But, I occasionally found (and still find) evidence of a whole dumped collection. Usually an odd number of BU coins from 30 years ago, but once it was a nearly complete set of 1938-1963 Jefferson nickels, with only the silver and most valuable dates picked out... about 4 solid rolls of the same wrapper and not a single coin less than 58 years old. But, from my experience, you are usually better off going for the boxes, since people almost never handle those directly. Also, about the pennies in the dime rolls... a cashier at a fast food restaurant once told me that a customer pulled that one over there... only they filed down the pennies to make them fit! Talk about a lot of work for $4.50! |

One of my banks definitely gives out CWRs. That's where I have picked out my oldest nickels and some pennies. Also, another customer at the bank obviously rolls lot of change because they were out of penny wrappers for about two weeks straight.
