We do not use that kind of tradition in the country where I live in, Holland. Over here those elongated cents are considered as garbage and often thrown away.

So are bottle caps and many more things people enjoy collecting. I think it's great that folks collect all kind of items all over the world. When I was in my teens some people in my birth country (Switzerland) went totally insane collecting the lids of half and half restaurant service containers - they created trading clubs, magazines etc. - and this even to a time nobody used the Internet.

I've seen some machines recently use nickles and not just pennies. I have a small collection of coins myself. Mostly from GA and FL.

Problem is that in NL the 1 and 2 cent coins (which is what we use in DE for such machines) hardly occur in circulation. I wonder whether those "elogation machines" use 5 cent coins instead ...

That's quite new too me, and even I live nearby the Euromast at Rotterdam, but I do not remember to have seen any elongated machine in the Hall... But it gives me something to keep in mind!

Note the remark "Gone". So while the Euromast apparently does not have a such a machine any more, the zoo may (!) still have one:

Here are three. The first one is an elongated 1979 from the Michigan State Numismatic Society, Dearborn MI spring show. April 2007

The other two are from the CSNS 68th anniversary convention May 9-12 2007 in St. Louis MO. It shows an image of the MO State Quarter. The middle on is a 1960 D and the bottom one is a 1961.

Now 'you' have me going through all of my elongated cents and putting the best in special 2x2s. I bought 200, should keep me busy for a while. An added bonus is playing 98 pick-up when a rubber band breaks on a stack......
