I hadn't looked at my 20th anniversary Silver Eagles in several weeks and I was saddened to see that the Unc. and the Proof had developed milk spots. The proof much more so - its reverse is speckled with them. The reverse proof coin still seems to be spot free - for now.

That sucks. That why I haven't bought a set. Just go out and replace the proof and unc with the normal ones. Ya, they won't be "original" but it's the same thing and it better than what you have. Then again, how noticeable are the spots?

The Unc. coin is not very noticeable at all. One small spot on the field on the reverse and a small spot on the device on the obverse. I have to REALLY look to see them. On the proof, the spots on the reverse run rampant.

I don't know if replacing the coins would help. I live in a very humid state and I've read that humidity may affect the spotting. So the replacements may spot as well.

Is it because they are pure silver that they spot? Do other silver coins tend to spot like this?

They started to spot because the Mint tried a new wash on them that makes them prone to spot. Get a humidifier or store them with those humidity jell pack things, and that might prevent it from happening, if it was the humidity. Most likely, it was probably the wash. My 2006-W unc dollar is also spotting, but there's nothing that can be done, for now at least.

The unc coin that came with my set - I got it from the Mint - was spotted when it arrived. Because of the timing, I went online and was able to buy another 2006-W to replace it. I had no idea these things were going to be so popular, so I got lucky and the replacement was a quick and easy fix - much easier than trying to get the Mint to replace it. Now it seems, PCGS is offering to grade these coins without reference to milk spots. Another perfect example of PCGS saying black is white and getting away with it. If a coin is spotted, the eye appeal, and therefore the grade is decreased, no matter what the holder says.
Rest in Peace

Right, I've heard people who had MS70 coins in PCGS get spots on them. I know they won't be able to sell it for MS70 money because of it.

I'm surprised your ASE 20th anniversary set developed milk spots so soon.

After reading the above posts, I checked my set, which I haven't done for awhile. Everything seems to be in order. Maybe a new designation could be created for spotted versus non-spotted ("MS70 - Spotted" - might do)!
