This stuff is nasty and can cause permanent damage to your eyes and other nasty stuff as well.

From what your saying, Acetone can cause damage to your nasty stuff? What do you consider your nasty stuff?

Hey... Not sure if anyone has asked this yet... Can you use acetone on coins?

Material Safety Data Sheets are written by pinhead lawyers with an eye towards every potential legal liability(real or imagined) in a commercial/industrial setting, they are useful but only to a point.

Actually, MSDS's are NOT written by lawyers at all. They do not generally have the regulatory expertise to write them. How do I know? I author them at work and I'm the adminstator of the authoring system (MSDgen). Every once in awhile I might consult with our company attorneys but they are actually quite clueless about chemistry, biology and the regulatory affairs side of our business.Sometimes they are able to provide insight into the legal side and certain implications of what we're doing, but that's as far as they go. I can override them with what I think is best for the company and do it routinely.

Just wanting to be clear...When I first started collecting I wasn't that careful and never wore gloves. I want to go back and perserve them (make sure I didn't leave any fingerprints etc :( )

If I conserve my coins with acetone and then send them off to be graded will they be graded?

I read in the thread 10-15 second soak and I also read under a minute. Does the length matter? I just want to get any oils off the coin that I might have gotten on them.

thx

I have noticed some 'permanent' fingerprints on some of my pennies. Will an extended bath in acetone remove those?

Too bad...

What about old tape glue? Someone had put tape on an old dime and I think cleaning it up will make it look awesome.

Im sure this is about the 300th time this has been asked as well, but how long is too long to leave coins in acetone? I just found some really cruddy wheats that I forgot that I had placed in a dish of acetone. Maybe 2 weeks ago... I expected a dramatic change but they look the same.

Leave prints where? Check your fingers to see if the prints came off from the Acetone.
You can leave a coin in Acetone for years but after the first several minutes, accomplishes nothing. And if caught in time, yes Acetone will remove fingerprints. Remember that the fingerprints left on a long time have etched themselves onto the coin. Then can not be removed. For tape just a few minutes. For grease and stuff, if it doesn't come off in a few minutes, toooooo late.
Then it's time to use Vodka. No, not on the coins, drink some and the coins will start looking much better.

I've been using the Acetone for a few days now and it has helped a lot. I had a 1964 cdn nickel with some green paint/ink on it and it came off nicely.

I have also been trying to use it on coins that have these little bits of gunk crusted on them. I am fighting the urge to take a pocket knife blade and picking them off. The Acetone hasn't worked.

The gunk is caked into the space between one of the letters on the reverse.

Its not a bad looking 1977 cdn penny so I am looking for any tips.

Just as an aside to obtaining acetone, I went into the local Sally Beauty store and picked up a bottle that listed acetone as the only ingredient for about $3. Worked great at cleaning a bunch of coins I had pulled from a decaying Uni-Safe plastic book after about 20 years.
