Coinhunter,

ebay and Paypal take somewhere in the neighborhood of 15% of the sale price. If he sold them for $88,000 he would only receive around $75,000. Under your estimates he would lose $5000. Since shipping is free he is also losing several hundred more dollars. He'd have to be under 3 cents each for this to pay off.

This isn't quite true. ebay fees get exponentially lower percentage wise the higher the price. Paypal is constant, but it's only a couple of percent. He would really only lose 3-4% total to fees, which is a huge advantage to selling bulk.

I'm trying to convince a few investor friends of mine to let me buy the lot and sell it off by the pound.

And no , the guy is NOT from realcent, they've been talking about the lot too. I think he's from one of the big coin forums (not this one though).

Here are the fees breakdown...

Insertion = $0.50
FV Fee = $1802.50
PayPal = 2552.30
Total = $4355.30

It would save him money if he did this as a auction instead as FV Fee would only be $100 max so he could lower it by $1700 right there. I wonder how low of a best offer he would take?

The only "value" I see in these coins is to buy the lot and re-sell them on ebay by the pound as your Grandpa's long lost unsearched hoard.

You could sell them as your Grandfather's long lost hoard of pennies he started after returning from WWI and no one has set eyes on since before Ike was president, the same hoard of pennies everyone believed was lost in the great flood of '58. Yessir, GURANTEED to be unsearched, never mind I sell coins for a living.

I totally forgot that the ebay fees drop of considerably after the first $100 or so (forget the exact amount). Still, I think his margin is too low to make this worth while.
