1858 Flying Eagle Question - Coin Community Forum

neuron Valued Member United States 254 Posts	Posted 12/20/2006 12:18 pm I have a very well worn 1858 Flying Eagle cent, would probably grade somewhere between P-1 and AG-3. I can tell that it is of the small letters variety. My question is in regards to the date: the second 8 seems rather thick compared to the first, and compared to the 1 and 5 as well. Does anyone know of 1858 varieties with a repunched 8, or thick 8, or something of that nature? I tried taking a picture but the date is so faded I couldn't get any contrast. Metalman Pillar of the Community United States 7123 Posts	Posted 12/20/2006 12:40 pm Breens lists one overdate variety for the 1858 1858/7 Identifiers are as follows. always with broken wing tips,tiny triangular chip midway between date and abdomen,, early die states have most of the top of the 7 visable later states only top right corner of 7 visable,,the latter are weak at date and lettering and usually in low grades. If your coin is very worn it may be very hard or impossible to see any trace of this variety on your coin. Rick Report this Post to the Staff
