I went by a pawn shop in the next town the other day. Apparently, they added 90% silver coins about a month ago. They charge near melt on dimes and quarters, but way over on halves and dollars. They had one War Nickel, and didn't know what it was worth. I bought some quarters and they threw the nickel in for 3x face!

Pawn shops are not generally a winning situation .....or the best bang for your buck....when it comes to "the consumer". It usually goes BEYOND normal decent fair "retail profiting". And make no mistake..... THEY KNOW WHAT JUNK SILVER IS GOING FOR ! They'll buy it as cheap as they can and sell it for as high as they can. (often hoping for the under-educated coin buyer to come in)(And they get A LOT of the general public coming in off the street to either buy or sell silver coins to them) They are at the shop owners mercy if they "need the money". And if they "have" the money and out of a mild curiosity, they want to "buy some neat silver coins"........the shop owner makes a NICE profit there too. JUST GENERALLY NOT A GOOD PLACE TO GO COIN HUNTIN' ! But, having said all of that......it's not EVERY shop....and congrats on the pick-ups !

Nice deal, a pawn shop is not the easiest place to buy silver under spot.

There was a pawn store here which was the only place I could find back in the day who would service a mechanical watch without sending it offsite.
The owner was in a wheel chair and he did all of the work himself and we talked briefly about watches etc.
It turns out that my mother worked with his cousin.
I found a master watchmaker who was also a fan of the brand I collected with an interest in preserving them and keeping them as close to original as possible but open to my ideas of custom modifying and building one off creations or in the coin word "patterns".
He built a few "first" ideas for me which many have copied in this day of the internet.
Anywho I went in there last fall and talked to one of his employees (as he always seemed to be working the title loan cash advance counter) and asked if they buy silver coins. He said yes. I asked if they sold silver coins as I was looking to buy some at hopefully a deal and he said no.
I guess they were on the lookout for key dates etc.
Anyways I heard bad news a few months later that Scott (the owner and watchman in the wheelchair) had passed and the business and building had been sold.
A few months later the building was being remodeled and had a sing up that said Pawn USA which I guess was a franchise vs. the locally owned and operated business that it had been in the past.
I have been wanting to stop in since it reopened but haven't had the time.
I guess I better hurry up while silver is down especially since the store is on a bus route direct from the hood.

I stopped in the Pawn USA store that had opened up recently and mentioned in my reply above.
For coins they had a 1986 Statue of Liberty Dollar with case for $31, 2 silver eagles for $40, a 1963 franklin for $14, and a 1941 Walker for $35. The had a few silver rounds I didn't even bother to ask about but they had a cracked open NGC slab with and 1861 quarter restrike / commemorative / what have you with 4 lines of text on the NGC insert about some PBS civil war special and they had the slab stuck backwards in the clear part that was left so I couldn't see the reverse through the NGC hologram stick but it was some wording about PBS. It was neat but they wanted $30 for it and someone had obviously tried to wipe the proof like surface clean.
Maybe next time.

I'm a big fan of good deals on coins... Unfortunately the good deals are tougher to come by on gold and silver. Nice job on the silver!!
