Does anyone besides me collect these (and other sets) just because we like them? I buy them not caring what the mintage is, as I don't plan to sell mine. Since I'm not selling mine, I don't care if the value goes up or not. I don't care what the percentage of 70's is, as I hate slabs for anything other than guaranteeing a coin is genuine. The mint has changed the rules in my favor so that I can get a set direct without fighting mega-dealers, flippers, investors and stackers. I say GREAT! I don't care how many people get mad that they aren't going to double or triple their money in two months. I don't care how many orders get canceled. I just want two sets for my collection (one to keep as a set on display, one to break up and put in an album) I AM A COLLECTOR!

In fact, I'm going to go change my signature line to reflect that.

@jgfindring I agree and I am too a COLLECTOR. I consider the American Silver Eagle the silver dollar of our era and my set is complete excepting the 1995 w. When the anniversary sets came out I bought one of each for my continued collection. I have no graded ASE's and cannot even see a difference from a 69 to a 70 coin.

There are also collectors that DO collect slabbed ASE's and some are proud of their great registry collections...some collect MS69's and some PF70's. The definition of "collector" resides in the mind of the person collecting the coins and includes ALL different types.. ...and they need someone to sell them that PCGS or NGC PF70 First Strike/Early Release from the San Fran Set (for example)

Quote: It will be interesting to see how the 2013 sets play out. Other than quality I can't see it being any different...dealers will over saturate the market with their thousands of sets and it will be a replay of 2012...or as Yogi once said "It's deja vu all over again" I agree, they would have to change the ordering format for anything to be different. The only significant difference I can think will happen is assuming the quality is better the 70s will have less of a premium as there will be more. Other than that I fully expect a glut of these on the after market again if dealers dont back away from their order numbers

After what has happened with the 2012 set, the dealers might be a little more cautious when it comes to ordering extreme amounts of the 2013 set. Then again they could go hog wild and take their chances. It's a big game to play. :)

The month that these sets were available was just not a good coin budget month for us. But, likely because of the dealer " glut ? " , we were able to get our set for $170 at a show in Oct. I have to say, I love my MS 70 coins , but I also would have hated to have to pay double or triple the release price of the OPG set, just because I wasn't one of the first 100K to order a set.

The other thing I was thinking that may happen instead of rolling back orders back theyll just get more orders graded after seeing the lack of a market for the raw sets with all that were out there

Good grief, you all just can't be satisfied. 2011... limits suck! We could not get our fair share! It was a debacle and the mint should be burned to the ground! 2012... to much time! I did not get my unlimited number of sets the next day! I had to wait a month! It was a debacle and the mint should be burned to the ground!
Really? And some people had to send them back and get new sets. So? Stuff happens. The mint takes them back until you are happy. But I guess there is some kind of crticism to be found in that too.

Frankly I had no issue with either 2011 or 2012. You can't make everyone happy with how they deal with ASEs, but I was satisfied with both sets and the amount of them I was able to obtain. It was kind of fun getting in on the 2011 set though before they ran out. :-)

I wasnt on here in 2011 and did end up missing out on that one, but I had no problem with it. Id be perfectly happy if they were a little more like the Perth Mint, lots of options with a low mintage on almost everything.

(although "fun" is stretching it a wee bit)

Got to CCF right as the '12 set was being announced, it's what got me deeper into the hobby. Definitely in for one or two of the '13 ASE set. I love the RP but wouldn't mind if they take some time off after this one. I also really liked the mint to order approach for the '12 set. I understand the scarcity argument for capping the numbers in limited sets but the idea of a one day rush to get in puts a harsh buzz on my pleasant time hobby. Hope pricing comes in < $150 but I have no illusions. Knowing they'll be from West Point and expected to be of higher quality may push me to get three this time around. Mint Purchases planned for 2013: 2013 West Point ASE set x2? Proof & Burnished ASE2012 Silver Proof Set 5 Star General set minus the gold (never say never...)

A limit would be nice though for reasons other than rarity. Ordering in the summer to get your coins in October wasnt fun. My guess would be the actual collector demand is around 150k, its very obvious a significant amount of last years sets were bought with the sole intention of resale. It was a very nice set though if you got a good one

I wouldn't be surprised if they try to sell this new set for even more of a mark up. Since they already raised the cost of the other ASE coins, I am sure they will raise this set up above the $149.95 mark. Hopefully not more than $10, but we shall see. As always it will depend on where the price of Ag is at the time they announce the cost. I am surprised they didn't already come out with a price, they didn't have any issues coming out with early pricing for the individual ASEs. Of couse we still don't know exactly what the uncirculated coin is going to be like other than it will be different than the standard "W" version. But still that shouldn't really make a difference in the cost of the set ( I wouldn't think ).
