The lack of contrast bothers me so I always notice it.

Might need to look under a loupe.

Would still like to see a photo, too.

Do you have a jeweler's scale? A plated SBA will be a few tenths or hundredths of a gram heavier than a sac.

Tricky thing is, the weight and electronic signature between Sacs and SBA's are identical. Probably impossible to tell with 100% certainty without a scale or whatever x-ray mumbo jumbo they use to analyse things for atomic makeup.

He previously said above that he cannot, but Conder said it may or may not be easy to see if it were struck on a manganese bronze clad planchet.

A few tenths or hundredths of a gram is meaningless when you don't know what it weighed before it was plated. The tolerance for a Sac is 8.1 grams +/- .3 grams. So even if you get a weight of 8.45 grams it it plated or just a slightly overweight planchet? If you get 8.2 is it plated or just a normal, within tolerance, weight planchet?

I have been trying to determine the same. I have a 1999 SBA that is lightly circulated. It is gold in color and can't determine if a mint error or plated. Would a picture help at all?

The Merrick Mint is selling gold plated SBA's 3 for $12.95. Probably one of those that got loose. The picture in the ad shows a 1999 date. Oh yeah, you also get a certificate of authenticity with your coins.
