The lack of contrast bothers me so I always notice it.
Might need to look under a loupe.
Would still like to see a photo, too.

Do you have a jeweler's scale? A plated SBA will be a few tenths or hundredths of a gram heavier than a sac. Tricky thing is, the weight and electronic signature between Sacs and SBA's are identical. Probably impossible to tell with 100% certainty without a scale or whatever x-ray mumbo jumbo they use to analyse things for atomic makeup.

A few tenths or hundredths of a gram is meaningless when you don't know what it weighed before it was plated. The tolerance for a Sac is 8.1 grams +/- .3 grams. So even if you get a weight of 8.45 grams it it plated or just a slightly overweight planchet? If you get 8.2 is it plated or just a normal, within tolerance, weight planchet?

I have been trying to determine the same. I have a 1999 SBA that is lightly circulated. It is gold in color and can't determine if a mint error or plated. Would a picture help at all?

The Merrick Mint is selling gold plated SBA's 3 for $12.95. Probably one of those that got loose. The picture in the ad shows a 1999 date. Oh yeah, you also get a certificate of authenticity with your coins.
