I will get the $1 to continue my proof commemorative set but still on the fence for the $5.

I picked up the $5 proof and have to agree with Commems on the color. To me you get that little bit of pink hue in dimmer light and at a little distance but in bright light close up it looks gold. At least that's how I see it.

How does it look right next to a normal gold commemorative coin?

Didn't even think to check until you asked JBuck. Side by side there is quite a difference. On it's own you don't really notice too much but side by side.........wow. Sorry, pic isn't the greatest, lots of dust.

Taphandle, Nice comparison - those side-by-side photos really show the difference in color.

Just got back from the Whitman Baltimore show (pretty dead, nearly half the tables were empty. This past week's east coast snow storm really hit at a bad time). Got to see the BCA coins in person at the Mint's booth. I will say that the proof $5 looks really nice in person. Definitely will be picking up a PCGS graded version at some point

I know that BadDog and OMXFL did the math on the $5 gold and came up with a gold weight of .21674 and I completely agree with this but have yet to see it anywhere in "writing". Not one site that I have seen gives a gold weight on this coin, they only give a total weight.
What's the big secret? Has anyone seen this in print at all? Anywhere? We all know it, I just would like to see it admitted somewhere.

Since they state on the web site that it's 85% gold and has a weight of 7.931 grams, that's enough information to do your own math. I suspect it's a marketing decision to not specifically list the gold weight. They don't list PM weight for the silver commemoratives either.

Ghastly disease ; unimaginably horrible and frightening. Coins fail to conduct any sense of urgency or necessity but rather reminiscent of a spring day in the park with butterflies and Grandma ... the message of hope is intended but not well portrayed. Wonderful motive, uninspiring designs.

I just received an email from Littleton advertising the BCA $5 gold proof for $625.

...or you could save just under $200 and get one of the 40,000 (both versions) left from the Mint

Exactly. It still boggles my mind that many people don't know about buying direct from the U.S. Mint and would pay these kinds of prices. Clearly there is a market for it though.
