$485 isn't in the right ballpark. But for the right price, it wouldn't look bad in an album where the rim damage might not be as evident.

I'm by no means an expert on coins but my 1840 Large Cent does not have the number 4 touching the number 8. The ebay link provided in an earlier post looks like the OP's coin as far as the 4 and 8 go but NGC's photo looks just like mine. It could be that your example is a type of variety. Joe

thats a shame about the damage to rim area. Looks UNC details to me. Hard to place a value on this for me.

It's the large date variaty. since not authenticated would $75 be reasonable? ----- Edited, added info below ----- Just found out the large date is much rarer then the small date, about 3x the price....

Unless you have a good reason (cost?) to buy that coin I suggest you skip it.

Quote:Compare with this one on ebay for about same price. (Not promoting seller in any way, just using as comparison) 362451968231 Is it me, or does that ebay coin look like an overdate? I know there were LD over SD 1840s, but I think the doubling is usually on the 1 and 8. Could be an interesting specimen if the price was right.

That isn't the lg/sm 18. I think $75-100 would be fair for the OP coin

I don't see any reason why I would buy this coin. 1840 large cents are plentiful and I would never buy a damaged one when there are so many quality 1840's available.

Quote: Just found out the large date is much rarer then the small date, about 3x the price.... The 1840 Large Date variety was minted in the millions and thousands survive today. It is not close to being considered rare. In fact the survival rate of the Small Date variety is much lower.
