That is one of the most fascinating pieces of the history of the common man in America that I have ever seen. Treasure it.

I agree. That's a real keeper. It doesn't get much more personal than that.

Do you have any intent to trace to a living descendent?

Quote: Do you have any intent to trace to a living descendent? No such plan. Besides a few ID medals, I have many hundreds of counterstamps and tokens that could conceivably be traced to descendents. It's something that could be done, I reckon, but it sure would be time consuming!

Happy to share and see the interest, I am. Here's a cast fake ID on a fake "coin" for comparison. These typically start out as flea market merchandise, sold at tempting prices. I've known savvy dealers who've been fooled by these fakes! Note the aforementioned differences ....

I have seen and bid on a few of those civil war dog tags at an auction site, but went out of my comfort level price.

most interesting story thanks for sharing
it seems a special area of collecting as each original piece is unique so I wonder if the fakes copy the originals or "invent" new soldiers ?

Quote: it seems a special area of collecting as each original piece is unique, so I wonder if the fakes copy the originals or "invent" new soldiers ? While either scenario is plausible, all the fakes I've seen have been produced in numbers, using the surnames Pender, Vairin, Washington, among others. All were Confederate officers. These often appear at flea markets where less astute buyers will tend to pay $50-$100, thinking they've struck gold. The disks used are cast copies of Liberty Seated halves and dollars, bearing Civil War dates and holed for suspension. Given the appearance of being well worn, aged, these fake "coins" have fooled many collectors and even coin dealers whom I've encountered. The holes deceptively suggest authenticity. Googling: World Exonumia, fake Confederate will bring you to one of the more informative websites on fake exonumia. Scroll down to read about the Confederate fakes .... http://www.exonumia.com/fakes.htm
