As a technical grade I would guess AU55 based on lack of obverse wear where it would be expected if more worn. Badly struck reverse looks like about VF30 to me at first glance, but I think it's bad strike rather than wear. If PCGS graded at less than AU53 I would wonder about baby splitting.

I don't recall hearing of baby splitting before, what is it?

Really a tough call. Horrid strike.

I agree about the strike, I wonder if was something more to do with the presses themselves many other examples of this date show some of the most amazingly detailed strikes I've seen from this series.

Obvious signs of circulation even with the very soft strike. AU-55 at best.

baby splitting is a reference to a story about king salomon in thje bible.

the coin is interesting. obverse looks to have ms mint luster but the reverse does not with rubbed surfaces and light parallel hairlines in the fields.

the coin is weakly struck in the center but sharply struck in the periphery in both sides. this is evident in the sharply struck denticles and stars/lettering. center devices are really weakly struck.

i'll say an au58, but one to avoid due to the washed out look of the weakly struck center devices.

would avoid at full freight, but would buy it for a significant discount due to the strike.

doesn't look like it will sell at discount due to the toning.

FYI Numis
"Baby Splitting" and "Baby Splitter" are informal terms often referred to in my line of work. It refers to a decision-maker who reaches a compromise decision between two different points of view rather than choosing one side or the other.
It is based on an Old Testament Biblical story in which King Soloman was required to choose which of two woman claimants was the true mother of a baby. Soloman ruled that he was unable to tell who was right, so he would split the baby in half and give half to each. Mortified, the imposter renounced her claim to save the baby's life, and all lived happily ever after.

This is an O-102a R2, which is known for its weak strike, but the strike issues should be not be as evident in the hair details as they seem to be. There appears to be light wear in addition to the strike weakness. I think this coin falls more in the EF45 range for that reason. The same holds true for the reverse, which I feel shows light wear in addition to the weaker strike issues. Looks like Wayte Raymond album toning, which is always beautiful.

That's a really tough one. Not sure what is strike weakness and what is wear, but I'm betting a good deal of it is due to a weak strike. I'll be conservative and say XF-45, but I really think this coin is one you need to see in hand to accurately grade.

A poorly struck AU-50 would be my guess. Not a coin I would want to own.

Worth EF money and I would not want it at any price .
PCGS probably said AU 50, based on the toning .
Noted the reverse is a striking issue and common on this variety .

You-Vs-PCGS-1810-CBH

I think there is way too much luster remaining for a VF grade, however, I'm assuming the reduction in grade must be due to the strike

Yes, apparently market graded for the dismal strike and possibly a very old cleaning?
