I believe it's called convention, and is normal among English speaking peoples. Just as the Cent symbol is conventionally placed following the amount. Quote:

I was taught many years ago that the dollar sign was always placed befor the value numbers: For example, 20 Dollars = $20, not 20$. But that was many years ago. Edit: Woops, just noticed something was written about this above ! Never Mind !  Edited by CoinForMe
