Sap Moderator Australia 16904 Posts	Posted Yesterday 7:14 pm To avoid the confusion implied by the OP's title, a Scottish 20 pence coin from the reign of one of the earlier Charleses would normally be abbreviated "20d" rather than "20p". I wish someone would tell the American TPGs this. They have the annoying tendency to abbreviate both the decimal and predecimal penny as "P". Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis Report this Post to the Staff

daltonista Pillar of the Community United States 1070 Posts	Posted Today 3H 2M ago No surprise, since I've had almost no exposure to Scottish coinage, but the legends on this 20d piece threw me a bit. Here's the helpful paragraph I quickly found online in J.D. Robertson's 1878 "Handbook to the Coinage of Scotland." My Latin's pretty rusty, but I'd go with this loose translation of the reverse legend: "Justice will strengthen the throne." It's hard for me, with my scant background in the history of that era, to be sure whether that was meant as a threat from the King to his subjects or as a comfort to them.
