Small Gold Coin As Part Of A Bracelet | US Gold Dollar

raddocpga New Member United States 3 Posts	Posted 12/05/2011 8:33 pm Hi all, So this is a very small gold-colored coin attached as part of a charm bracelet, made of 14K gold. Just wondering what coin this might be and what it is composed of. On the obverse is: "OCT 20 * 1881" and a bust with crown. On the reverse is simply the number "1" surrounded by some sort of wreath. IBGolden Pillar of the Community Canada 598 Posts	Posted 12/05/2011 9:02 pm What you have is a 1 dollar U.S. gold coin. It's a Type III... minted from 1856 to 1889. It is/was approximately 1.6 grams(heavy wear on the coin would make it a little lighter) of 90% gold. "United States of America" used to be where the date is now inscribed around the Indian Princess's image... the other side used to have the word Dollar under the "1". It's just very worn and maybe you can still make it out with angled lighting and magnification. Under the word dollar would be the date... also worn. When a coin is... say, modified, in such a fashion... to commemorate a special event, it's often commonly referrred to as a love token. These coins are fairly common in this condition and are not worth much over bullion/melt value of their gold content. Just google pictures for "U.S. 1 Dollar Gold Coin Type III" to get a better idea of what it use to look like. ... and welcome to CCF! Report this Post to the Staff
