I saw this thread and decided to try a tool I use for something completely different:

That's a tool to check weight and balance on a Boy Scout Pinewood Derby car. When I saw this discussion, I pulled out my scale and weighed a 1946 wheat. It was 3.0 grams. Then I weighed a 2011 shield - 2.5 grams.
The nice thing about this scale is that you can zero it out with something on it. So if you have a coin in a saflip and don't want to take it out, just zero the scale with an empty saflip first.
There may be cheaper solutions, but here is one for about $20 that will definitely and digitally differentiate between 2.5 grams and 3.0 grams without fail and should be available from any hobby supply store that stocks materials for the Cub Scout/Boy Scout Pinewood Derby races.
