Hey CCF! I had a crazy idea today. I am thinking of taking a coffee can and attaching it to a motor like those artificial rock tumblers. Then, I would fill it with BBs, and a modern coin and see if the spinning motion will wear down the coin in a natural, even way.

Do you think this will work? Thoughts, comments?

I would think that BBs would just leave gouges, not natural-looking wear( unless you like your coins to look like you found them in the middle of the road). If you want it to look natural, just stick it in your pocket for a few weeks. Also, why would you want wear on your coins, anyway?

You could try putting oddly shaped metal objects like small screws/bolts in with coins to gauge them more. Even saying that though makes me cringe. Why are you wanting to wear your coins? I am not fond of damaging a coin without having a constructive reason such as jewelry or art.

I can't imagine what the objective is here, but there's only one way to find out for sure. Let us know how it comes out.

I have some reaaaallllyyy cleaned coins, and I tend to lose pocket pieces. One of the coins is a 1928 Peace dollar, so I hope you can understand my worry here.

"Aha! Now I see!" said the blind man as he tripped over the concrete block and fell into the ditch.

Those copper-plated BBs might be a bit hard and dent the coin up on you, though. Maybe the lead birdshot from some shotgun shells with a little bit of topsoil mixed in?

You may be coming up with a new market need for a type of new product here. Something that could be called "VerdigrisIt" or "VerdigrisNow" or "SpeedVerdigris"...

Ahhhh, *falling next to Freddy*

Any kind of tumbling will dent the snot out of a silver coin. Perhaps a couple shop towels and a quarter or two in the can...

Most jeans have a small pocket above the right hand pocket. You know the ones I'm talking about, right? I keep my pocket piece of the day in that pocket. The small size of the pocket will keep even the smallest coin from falling out(unless you hang upside-down =) ).

Here is a general Moh's hardness scale:

Anything above silver is softer and *might* polish the coin (?) like in a rock/bottle tumbler. Anything below is harder than silver and would likely mar the coin worse the farther down the list you go.

I think I would test out tumbling medium on junk silver dimes/quarters before putting in a Peace dollar.

Lead - 1.5
Tin - 1.5
Zinc - 2.5
Gold - 2.5 - 3
Silver - 2.5 - 3
Aluminum - 2.5 - 3
Copper - 3
Brass - 3
Bronze - 3
Nickel - 4
Platinum - 4 - 4.5
Steel - 4 - 4.5
Iron - 4.5
Palladium - 4.75
Rhodium - 6
Titanium - 6
Hardened Steel - 7 - 8
Tungsten - 7.5
Tungsten Carbide - 8.5 - 9

Of course diamond measures out at 10.

smokeriderdon,

What do you mean by 'why?.'. It's obvious that he wants to devalue his coins. Just like they did to blue jeans to give them a beat-up worn in look.

Thanks, CCF. You guys made me see the light here.

I had no idea that existed. I have scrapped this project for the time being, and I am going to go with the traditional pocket piece route.

The fact that I had a little accident with BBs and they're now strewn about my family room floor can't have helped, either.
Rest in Peace

Remember this:

It is better to spill your BB's than it is to lose your marbles.
