CCF, I have a dilemma.
It's a heavily-corroded, filthy 1919 cent, so bad that the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the back are barely ghosts and part of LIBERTY is missing. Amazingly, Lincoln's facial features and the date are still clear--but the back just says URIBUS UNUM up top, and the whole thing is so nasty it looks almost black. I've used Verdicare (for the corrosion), olive oil, soap and distilled water, rubbing alcohol . . . no dice.
It's wasted. There is no restoring this coin. It's junk.
But it's also almost 100 years old and I feel bad throwing it in the garbage.
What do you do with a coin like this?

Throw it in the copper hoard with all the other pre 1982 cents.

Nina,
Please do not throw that coin away but instead consider donating it to a children's program dedicated to educating youths with the history of coins.
I personally would just wrap it up in a Mylar sleeve and donate it to Bobby or Susan for the next national coin show that they attend.
I can almost guarantee you that any child would love to receive a coin like this and be 100 percent satisfied.

If you go through boxes of pennies, throw it back in with the stuff you take back to the bank. It will make someones day.

MD, I love this idea! I don't want to just scrap it because it's so old, but, well . . . it doesn't fill a hole in my book, my space is limited, and . . . let's put it this way, I tried to get pictures and all I was getting on my screen was a blackish circular thing.

What 52Raymo said. Set it free and let someone else "discover" a Wheat in change. John1

Actually I would put it on a rail road track, under a detonator, and leave it there.

Put it back into circulation and sometime down the road, someone may become interested in coins because of it

Add it to a pile of change you may take to a bank. Them imagine how someday, someone will be bragging about finding a 100 year old coin still in circulation. I throw in an old Wheat cent every time I take change back to my bank.

I side with the spend it crowd. Put it back out there for someone to find.

Spend it and let some kid find a treasure in his pocket.
