I tried to tone a copper round like it was circulated...didnt turn out too badly, I just heated and cooled it.
I might put that in a beating environment and try and get some of that going.

Silver Searcher, please don't be offended, your name gives nothing away (also I have enough crazy friends not to assume): do you carry a purse?
If you do, the method I used on a couple of cleaned cents (since only my work pants have pockets and I wear skirts most of the time) is to carry a PURSE piece. Baste a small piece of cloth around your coin, giving it just barely enough room to move around inside the "pocket," and toss it right in with your receipts and wallet. Works just as well. When you're ready to take a look, dig it off the floor of the purse.
If you happen to not carry a purse/murse, give it to a wife or girlfriend who does.

Has anyone ever heard of a 'jingled' coin?
This used to be done with gold coins, during the late 1800's, and is one of the reason why gold coins were withdrawn from normal circulation.
Perhaps 50 or so gold coins were put in a leather bag which was jiggled up and down by an electric motor which drove an eccentric crank, attached to the leather bag. Very small particles of gold dust were worn off the coins, and collected in the leather of the bag. The bag was destroyed later with acid, and about about 2% by weight of gold was recovered.
The coins just looked liked they had been heavily circulated.

Quote: Hey CCF! I had a crazy idea today. I am thinking of taking a coffee can and attaching it to a motor like those artificial rock tumblers. Then, I would fill it with BBs, and a modern coin and see if the spinning motion will wear down the coin in a natural, even way. To many variables left out to consider a realistic reply. For example at what speed would this can be turning? If excessively fast, not much would happen since everything would simply stick to the inside wallls of the can. How many BB's? Completely filled would not allow the coin to move at all. How big a can? And don't forget some are made of Aluminum and some steel. What type of modern coin? If large, will not move much. If small, who knows?

NO NO NO NO!! Don't do it! This is from someone who LOVES worn coins! the bb's will put dents in silver if it was a clad or nickel coin maybe not but 90%ag would be toast within an hour. I recommend putting it in a ziploc bag (not a glass jar as the coin will get some nasty rim hits) with a Kennedy half, a golden dollar, a quarter, and a few pennies, (the different sizes and compositions will make the wear more even) and GENTLY shake the coins for a few minutes every few hours, (or as often as you want) After a while the coin will wear down but the silver will have a shiny appearance due to the freshly exposed silver. If you want the coin to look old and have a nice circulation cameo, take warm hard boiled eggs and put them in a jar with the coin and put some plastic wrap over the jar to turn the coin black, do NOT let the egg touch the coin, (make sure to do this to both sides, and it may take more than once) Once the coin is COMPLETELY black, let it sit for a few hours, then carry the coin in a pocket with a few coins or your keys for a few days, and voilĂ you have a coin that has an ancient looking surface. It takes a long time and work, and the coin may be a few grades lower, but you are essentially condensing 50-100 years of wear and toning into a few weeks. It took me forever for me to perfect this lol

If you happen to not carry a purse/murse, give it to a wife or girlfriend who does. Nina, no offense taken However, I'm a male YN, so that rules out: Purse Murse Wife Girlfriend.... not JUST yet. Working on that. Carl, I'm probably not going to do it, I was only trying to work out the details, and after a lot of BBs being strewn around, I gave up. 1967cp, don't worry. Your idea looked really interesting, and I may try it out. Thanks!
