Is This A Blank Planchet? - Coin Community Forum

phankins11 Valued Member United States 355 Posts	Posted 08/06/2013 10:34 am Hey all, my in-laws have been getting ready to move and my father in-law found this and I've all but dismissed it as a type 2 cent planchet. Here's why I've all but dismissed it as being a blank. While it is the exact same size, in diameter, as a cent, and, to the naked eye, seems to be darn close to the same thickness, the weight is .3 grams off of what a 2009, and on, cent should weigh. I wanted to get ya'lls opinions thought before I dismiss it as being anything numismatic. If it's not numismatic what could it be...I've never seen a copper disk like this before. coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 08/07/2013 3:15 pm When dropped on a table, does it sound like a zinc cent? It appears to be genuine from the images. The blank may just be light a little. Probably with tolerance for the mint. Blank type 1 Planchet type 2 (Ran through the setup mill. Now a planchet.) Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 08/07/2013 3:28 pm Can you see anywhere that shows the zinc underneath? It looks correct. The weight for a zinc is 2.5 grams. Try another cent on your scale to see if it is accurate? Report this Post to the Staff
phankins11 Valued Member United States 355 Posts	Posted 08/08/2013 12:54 pm Coop, I did look for scratches and at the side of it but found nothing to show if there is zinc under the copper. I did also drop it on the table with a 2013 penny to see if they sounded similar and they do honestly... Weight wise when I weigh any other cent from 2009 on they're consistently 2.5 grams and this thin is 2.8 consistently. Report this Post to the Staff
