epikur Pillar of the Community Sweden 729 Posts	Posted 10/25/2013 5:16 pm Got this tarnished old 1918-S quarter off of ebay the other week... and after only a 4 hour soak: So I'm happy with that and will leave it in overnight. However, I started looking at it closely, and found this odd looking raised mark on the left panel. It's abount 2mm long. Would this be a lint from the cloth they wiped the dies or planchet with? It could also be an oddly shaped nick of some sort as it is a circulated coin. I could not find the same mark on other 1918-S coins on the PCGS Coinfacts photos. When I first saw it, I thgoutbh it was a nick as well, but it seems too oddly shaped to be a nick or a scratch...It does however fit the shape of lint. Yeah, I looked through more 18-S's, but couldnt find it anywhere Report this Post to the Staff
Susuman Pillar of the Community United States 595 Posts	Posted 10/25/2013 10:03 pm If it's raised, then that would mean a depression in the die. Something on the planchet would leave a depression on the coin as it would be pressed in. This would rule out a thread from a polishing cloth. Possibly a nick in the die. If this is the case, there might (or should) be more of them out there somewhere. Report this Post to the Staff

The shape of it rules out scratches...I havent seen a sperm like scratch yet :P Anyways, will take better pics tomorrow and try to show it's raised in a better way Report this Post to the Staff
just carl Bedrock of the Community United States 20753 Posts	Posted 10/26/2013 7:18 pm You could try a little more Acetone but usually after only a few minutes, whatever happens in Acetone will still be the same after yours, days or even years.
