1987 Lincoln...struck Through Wire/String ?or PMD?

As far as the carbon spots (I think that's what you are dealing with) are concerned, I don't think they can be removed without ruining the coin. I'm currently making my living in the recycling industry; part of my work exposure regularly nets me coins which have been through the refinement process. I get usable coppers regularly, and 1- or 2-year-old zlincolns which have been forever trashed by the same process. They have no resistance to imperfect conditions. Report this Post to the Staff
coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 01/09/2014 02:04 am It is a struck through thread. As far a carbon spots, no. There is no carbon in the zinc plated planchets. More of a stain issue. Probably sneeze droplets that contaminated the coin. I'd leave it alone. It is now a stain. I find the struck through thread issues a lot on proof cents. Just a piece of fiber that gets into the striking chamber. Hard to visualize that something as thin as nylon string - you can break it easily in your hands - also has the structural integrity to imprint its' cross-section cleanly into metal.
