1909 Vbd Penny

I just found a 1909 VBD penny on a pendant inherited from a relative; I assume that some relative in the past thought it was valuable, and made a pendant out of it. It looks like it's just a copper strip hammered around the penny, so I could remove it (or at least get a jeweler to do so; I don't think I could get it off without destroying the penny).

I saw that 1909 VBD proofs are worth a heckuva lot. How can I find out if it is a proof, as this could explain why somebody thought it was valuable and made a necklace of it?

Welcome to CCF! Unfortunately, if it was ever a proof, that was a long time ago. Right now it's likely a high grade 1909 VDB. Closer shots and the folks here would be happy to give you grade.

Considering it is now a pendant, I would think it's full of fingerprints, scratches, etc. All such things rather lower the price of any coin.
