Yogisd1 New Member United States 16 Posts	Posted 09/08/2015 12:32 am I picked up some old proof sets last week. Looking at the penny in the '72 set, I noticed there is no VDB at the bottom. It looks like it tried to stamp something, but ended up as two blobs and a flat spot. I tried for an hour to get a good picture, but this one is the best I could do. Would this be considered an error? Any comments would be appreciated. Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 09/08/2015 02:14 am That would be impossible to be a Struck Through Grease. The VDB is incuse, thus it is raised on the die. So it would have to be that the raised device on the die is worn off. Report this Post to the Staff

coop Bedrock of the Community United States 62064 Posts	Posted 09/09/2015 04:31 am The polishing to remove a clash is the cause. Not die wear. The incuse devices are higher on the die than the field. Polishing will remove these. on the ATB Quarters (America The Beautiful series) the incuse devices on the reverse are taller on the fields. Here is an example: Not much polishing would be able to remove the raised devices on the die. Report this Post to the Staff
