Hi all!

I just searched a box of nickels and only found three 2009 Nickels. One was in horrible condition and the other two were so-so.

Have you all had similar findings?

I usually find 1 for every 5 boxes searched.

Same as Jack; only one every few boxes. Most are in circulated to heavily circulated (dings/dents, not so much wear). But high grade 2009s can be had with patience.

Hang in there!

I just found one in the end of a boxes the other day. Dirty, but seemed to be not too bad shape otherwise. Was the first I had seen in about 6 boxes.

Take all the coins ever minted in the US that are nickel sized and call it A
take the mintage of all 2009 nickels and call it X
take various world coins that are the size of the US nickel and call it W

You have an X in A chance percentage of finding a 2009 nickel with a margin of error of W. That is how common they are.

And there were about 3 billion nickels made 1964, and about 80 million made in 2009.

2009 was 6 years ago and I have seen none. yea you read that right. I have not seen a single one. I have found only 1 2009 dime in the same time period. I have found multiple 2009 quarters and one cent coins but no nickels.

I usually find one or 2 per box. Have a sandwich bag full of them. I no longer keep them unless its a 2009 - P or almost uncirculated in which I have not found any in that condition.

Hmmm, we might be somehow related. I also have never yet found any in circulation or it roll-hunting. The only way I got some was to buy them (cost me 99-cents for the "P" and $1.45 for the "D").

I am working on a second Jefferson set, and I'm also trying to find certain USA coins for a Canadian friend, so I'm still trying to find a couple more of each the hard way. If I don't come across any in the next five years then I'll probably buy them again!

Here is your culprit:

On top of a very small mintage, I would wager that no more than 5% of 2009 nickels were allowed to circulate.

I have found two (both with a D mint mark, like the majority of U.S. coins I get). One I got through coin roll hunting, the other I got in change. I only kept the one I got in change though, because the other was in a very bad condition.

Thanks for the replies guys! I should consider myself lucky I found the three in one box. I also noticed I had about 5 or 6 P's from when I roll hunted about 5 years ago. I guess everyone is hoarding them for the time being, which means their price must be artificially inflated. I'm about to go through another box I'll be happy if I get at least 3 again. :D

I've found 4 after a few boxes. 3d's and 1p. Not bad and glad I filled those holes.

I have certainly seen more 2009 Dimes than any other denomination.
