Morgan silver dollars were minted primarily as back-up silver coin for silver certificates authorized in the Bland-Allison Act of 1878. Too heavy for everyday commercial transactions, they were often given as birthday or Christmas gift. I am guessing that the very worn Morgans, below VF, saw action in Nevada casinos from 1930 to the 1970's, when they were still used in slot machines and blackjack tables. Otherwise they remained in bank vaults. Any thoughts on how else they became so worn?
I've also read that during those same periods of time that there was a segment of the population that had little confidence in 'government paper money' and that a lot of small scale local trade was done with coins for that reason.
