I just found a F/VF 1939 nickel in my change from Dunkin Donuts. The only guide I have available is a world coin guide. It differentiates between a Type I and Type II for all mint marks of this year but doesn't explain the difference between the two.

I'm gonna go get a box of nickels now.

There is a large and small mint mark but not on the 39 look for doubling on the reverse in the monticello and five cents. otherwise no premium.

On the 1939 and 1939-D there is also "reverse of 1940" -- differentiation from the standard 1939 being that the steps are either poorly-struck or well-struck steps on the reverse. I forget which year, 39 or 40 had which. PCGS price guide places no premium on either.

Also, look for the designer's initials, "FS" inscription on the coin.
