With encouragement of jbuck and many others, I spent countless wee hours of looking at portraits of president Eisenhower.

I didn't know too much about Eisenhower dollars before this project and here are some observations that I made in the process.

1. Good looking MS condition Ikes are not plentiful as I thought. I have gone through most of my existing mint sets, but ended up using only three. (I have dozens of quarters, dimes, nickels, & pennies, both mint & proofs)

2. 1971 & 1972 BU Ikes are even harder to find. I guess it's more rare since 1971 & 1972 year mint set didn't even include Ike dollar.

3. Why is 1973 silver BU mint Ikes more expensive than 1971, 1972, & 1974? Again, I guess they are more rare.

4. There were plentiful, good looking Ike proofs. And I try to pick some nice cameo Ikes. These are relatively inexpensive.

This was a fun project!
I have about 40 to 50 Ikes left over. I might think about getting another set... but need to work on my 7070 first.

Here are the Ikes....

Very nice. Were you around when the Ikes were made? I can't believe they decided to make a new dollar coin that no one would use. The small golden dollar has worked out nicely. True that the mint has made too many of them, but I see them used somewhat often (even for change at retail stores).

Really nice work @cj. My fave is that '71 proof.

You did a remarkable job of finding coins that fit the set, rather than ones that looked "different".

Thanks for sharing your thoughts after working through the set. I always count that type of information as especially valuable if I ever attempt that type of set myself.

A whole passel of

I have duplicates in mine (1971-D, 1972, 1976 V1, 1977-D). I have thought about swapping them out over the years, but they are family now.

For what it is worth, the 1972 is a V1. My actual 1972 hole has a V3. This was just dumb luck, as I had them long before I learned there were three 1972 varieties.

If I ever get a 1972 V2, it will probably be for my recently started slabbed set.

I agree with others ... this is a very nice looking set.

I think Ike sets are a great addition to any collection ...
