Sorry, too many cuts and that area under the third pillar goes well into the 4th step. That cut on the right ruins everything too and the coin is at best a low AU. FS only count on MS coins, but some, like an AU50 and better 1953S or 1954S ( there are others ) with a few steps is worth hanging onto in my opinion. They are very scarce too! Uninterrupted steps free of nicks, cuts, and dings only count as a full step. The incuse line ( top of step ) has to be complete from left to right. I like your enthusiasm. The 1978 is not a very difficult year for full steps. Keep looking. It is not as easy as one might think to find true full step Jeffersons. Oh ... and great pictures

That is a Philly mint coin. San Fran is expected to have steps, as they're proofs.

I will take that back, 1978 was a bit of a tougher year and 1979 being slightly even more difficult. I looked in my set and have neglected to upgrade my 1978. The obverse was worse. Glad you brought this up. Here's my reverse and it has maybe 4 and 1/2 steps counted conservatively. I may have a duplicate with a much nicer obverse but I bet I put this one in the set for the better steps. We don't count the top, the porch. We count the line that is incised under the risers. My image is taken with the nickel in a hard 2x2 with fingerprints and tiny scratches, dust etc. on the 2x2 but it is an attractive nickel with nice luster. The nickel is probably MS63 with only 4.5 steps tops. You are probably right, 1978 P nickels are a bit difficult and then these would have to be in MS to even get a FS designation. A nice MS66 with a few steps would be a keeper.

I am definitely going to start getting more nickel rolls when I hit the bank I get more variety in my penny rolls but I think I enjoy nickels better the box of pennies I've just started seems like a nice one I've got 2 wheats per roll only on roll 9 so maybe I'll find a good one as for the nickels I can't wait to find my first War Nickel I thought I found one when I found a 42 in my roll but it wasn't when I flipped it over

You are certainly on the right track. I have no doubt that you'll find some nice FS with that enthusiasm.

Quote: You are certainly on the right track. I have no doubt that you'll find some nice FS with that enthusiasm. I'm impressed with the enthusiasm as well but the '78 nickels are just fading away. Not only are they getting harder and harder to find but when they are found there is more and more wear on them. After they reach VF even FS nickels will have most of the steps worn away. It might not be possible to improve this specimen. It's a high end AU and apparently from a cut up mint set. AU 1978 nickels are getting very tough to find and only about one '78 in 100 mint sets is FS if memory serves.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

It's a nice nickel and you might never find a better one.
Don't send it in for grading or expect to sell it for a premium any time soon though.
