I'm not saying this is a DDR,But the letters look a bit wide and taller than the other coins I found. Maybe a slight MD?

as others have said - normal wear. Its a Buffalo nickel though so in my mind they are all something special

Looks to me like the reverse has been cleaned with some sort of abrasive tool, giving it a strange sort of luster.
