LP4s never made it to us; I still have less than 5 coins from both mints.

LP4 was the lowest mintage of all the 2009 cents. The P LP4 has a mintage of only 129,600,000 - which is extremely low by today's standards.

I'm with jbuck. I rarely see a 2009 anything in circulation either.

I sometimes wonder, why didn't people in the past save all those rare dates that are worth a lot of money now?

Also, there just weren't many coin collectors in the past. Way back when I was a kid I never met anyone that collected coins or knew of anyone that did. I never saw hobby stores that delt with coins. Although there was a sort of coin store in my neighborhood. Money was tight and saving coins just was not smart since most people just didn't have enough money to stash away coins. Ever see movies about the 30's? People waiting in line for soup so stashing away coins just didn't get real popular.
As to coins from the 2009's. Today's people are just the opposite. Stashing away piles of coins that will never be worth what the same money could have produced at a bank in interest.

When I did a bit of roll hunting in late 2015 to early 2016, I pulled close to two rolls of 2009-D cents and a handful of Ps. I did a lot more nickels than cents- they're certainly rarer, but I got maybe two dozen, mostly D (I'll check my spreadsheet when I get a chance). I only ever found one dime, about two years ago.

I went to the Lincoln City, IN release ceremony for the LP2 / Formative Years and stocked up about 20 rolls worth. At the time, I had wished I had gone to the LP1 ceremony in KY. There was a kind of frenzy at the time once it was realized that mintages would be very low; I figured if I had a stockpile of LP2's, I could trade them for other releases. I did trade for some LP1s with someone on the forum but eventually just held on to my LP2s and managed to get nice single examples of LP3s and LP4s from a forum member here.

These have been hoarded quite a bit and combined with the low mintages, you don't see them often. I have a few 2009 dimes I saved but have yet to come across a 2009 nickel in circulation.

I was finding a bunch while roll hunting over a year ago. I haven't been roll hunting as much lately, but I have found MAYBE 1-3 per box, if any at all. I have a few rolls of mixed designs, and I think some BU rolls of the LP2 (?) from Denver.

I found one last weekend in a Mexican restaurant take-a-penny dish.

There around, just not in circulation... Too stubborn to release my hoard to the wild. A box of P D of LP2 and a box of P D of LP3. Bought at face, I just couldn't throw down what was wanted for LP1 and LP4 and never saw any solid boxes come my way for LP1 and LP4...

I do have to say though a great yr for coins, I even took the family to the release of LP3 in Springfield. Cleaned up on ebay with the 70+ rolls of postmarked rolls I was able to acquire. Think I have about 10 of those rolls left sitting in nice air tight tubes.

I'm still looking for 2009s and the DC & Territories quarters, all low mintage.

Reminds me of an old song:

Where have all the Lincolns gone
Long time passing
Where have all the Lincolns gone
Long time ago
Where have all the Lincolns gone
Collectors pick them, every one
Oh, when will they ever learn
Oh, when will they ever learn

I remember dealers selling rolls of the 2009 cents in 2009 for $6-7 per roll right after each one was "released" (if you want to call it that). I didn't bite at $6 per roll but I think I did pay $3 months later for a couple rolls. Too much I know. I also remember getting some LP4 P cent rolls at McDonalds near the end of 2009. I begged them to sell me 2 rolls. I have seen them hit or miss since then but lately they are few and far between and ones that I do get are not worth keeping. I think I have gotten 1 or 2 of the 2009 nickels and dimes since 2009. They are really not out there in circulation (someone has them). I get a 2009 quarter every now and them but they are also circulated and not worth saving. I don't roll search but I still check every coin that crosses my path!
