I have a number of items I would like to place on ebay that have damaged, scratched cases. My primary goal is to not have unhappy customers and no negative feedback. A secondary goal would be to appeal to the most buyers and likely fetch the best price. I've been struggling with the best way to deal with less than optimal packaging. I will definitely accurately represent the item, but I'm not sure that is a guarantee against unhappy customers. On the one hand, I've considered removing them and discarding the packaging, placing them in a coin capsule instead. I'm just not sure how much the packaging appeals to people who will be bidding on these types of items. I may even just wait awhile with some of this stuff so as not to risk getting negative feedback early on.
With these, I could just show the coin, and then deliver it in the damaged package. I fear even this is risky. Also, could someone please tell me what company has that logo on the blue case?
On the top two of these items, the velvet has fallen off the bottom. The red one has a pretty scuffed velvet, and the third one has one of the little tabs broken on the lid. The packages are all identical, so maybe I should just consolidate a couple of items into decent packaging and discard the rest.
With these proof coins, I can't see any harm in just removing the proof coins (wearing cotton gloves) from the packaging and placing them in flips or capsules. Any reason I shouldn't do that.
I'd be interrested to hear if any of you have had any experiences with these types of items. As I've typed all of this, perhaps I'm just overthinking this.

Jadey, I would just show the images of the damage that you've shown here, and maybe slightly better images of the coins. I think you'll be fine as long as everything is shown and described, and you clarify that there is no damage to the coins (if that is the case).

Tell it as it is. And show all the damage. And keep the dog away

No, you are not overthinking it. I have a few with similar issues.
In November I sold a 1972 Jamaica $10 coin in packaging like you show in your last photo (original printed colored carboard with window). The packaging was stained, and on the reverse, the coin could fall out of the window. I did not mention anything about original packaging in my title, I only used closeup photos of the coin, but I did mention in the listing it was in its original packing, which was in poor condition.
I ran it as a BIN and got my asking price. But I am a bit over 1,000 feedback.
I agree with the others, that you should be presenting this as a coin sale, not a "coin in original packaging" sale, in order to not get dinged. SO, take better closeup photos of the coin. and if you wish show the packaging in a 3d photo, or at least disclose it in the description. You do not want to market the original packaging as adding any kind of value, given its condition.
Also, do your research on prices these items have sold at recently before choosing your selling approach. Some of them are very common, and you should be careful not to get burned in an auction by starting lower than you want to sell them.

The logo looks like the US mint logo they used for these bicentennial medals. Theres lots of them on ebay. Agree, just show the cases as is, so nothing is hidden. Nothing wrong with protecting those other proofs in flips....just handle carefully.

I agree with showing and describing full detail of what you're offering, for the reasons stated. That logo is the "Bicentennial logo commissioned by the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission" as described at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unite...Bicentennial

Thanks everybody for your input. @tdziemia How long do you typically have to wait for a BIN to sell? I had to plead with ebay yesterday to increase my listing limit to 50/month. I'd like to get the most out of my coins, but I also don't want them sitting out there for a long time eating into my 50 limit. I'd also be interested in what you got for your 1972 Jamaica $10. I have one in the black display case with COA that I was going to list. Maybe I will try a BIN. When you look at the sold items on ebay, many of the BIN prices are crossed out with Best Offer Accepted, so it can be difficult to get a sense of the sale price.

@jadey, I got something like $26 with customer paying for shipping, but it was the 2d or 3d time I listed at that price. I think I was pretty lucky (sale date was Nov. 13, so you can take a look). I don't need to count on the income from coin sales, so my strategy is to hold out for the price I think the coin is worth, after doing my research. Not every seller will want to do it that way. And it gets easier when you are up to 50 listings a month, and also start to get the offers for additional free listings.
To find out the Best Offer prices, you can sort the sold items search by ascending (price+shipping), and you can at least get an idea of what those best offers were. For example, if you do that for the Jamaica coin, you will find some examples in original holders that were $27.99 OBO, and you can figure out their Best Offer sale price was between $22.25 and 25.25 (plus 3.75 shipping).
