I discovered a Buffalo nickel when I was making a purchase and thought it might be a foreign coin from some recent travels. The date is worn off but many other features remain good. I thought about using the vinegar/hydrogen peroxide treatment to recover the date, but read through some extremely helpful threads here and believe that I have a 1921 Buffalo nickel after comparing the wave of the ribbon and the extra grooves in the braid. The problem is that I can't read the MM and it looks like something could be there. If it is S, the coin could have a bit of value because of its scarcity. If it is nothing, i.e. P, it wouldn't be worth the price of Nic-a-Date. What should I do? If I do the acid soak and it turns out to be an S, will it lose most of the extra value? Not great photos, but I'm pretty sure you don't have an S mint there. The letters around it are mostly intact so it's unlikely the MM wore away.

to CCF. You should post better pics of the date,not so close and the mint mark area as well. I am not seeing any sign of a mint mark though. John1  |

Yes your photos are are too close and blurry to see anything . I wouldn't worry about the value of your Nickel ,from the little that I can see the coin looks very worn . To me, it doesn't matter if you treat it or not .  |

Thanks very much for the various comments, which I greatly appreciate. Apologies for the lousy pix and I will admit to having some trouble using the uploading tools. But I think that I have the answer about this coin's likely provenance and will give the vinegar/hydrogen peroxide bath a try to satisfy my own curiosity about the date. Its been fun and many thanks again!

The letters and area around FIVE CENTS is clear enough that if there had been a mintmark it would be clearly visible, or at least abundantly clear that there was a mintmark there. Instead it is clear that this is a Philadelphia issue.
