I was wonderi g if this was an error, variety, or what it could be. Does anyone know the story on these?

Guessing it's a grease-fill situation, but it almost looks like a direct hit in this pic.

The "hit" you are talking about may just be the photo. It's like there is a little remnance of the AW but I too wondered if it was a grease filled situation.

Most likely the result of die polishing.
My birth year is 1941 and the Proof halves come in "with initials" and "without initials" varieties, the result of die polishing.
I can imagine this happening to business strikes also.

Thank you all for the replies and help with the initials. Also thank you for the compliments on the coin. I couldn't quite get the luster to come out in the pic, but it is pretty nice. Paid about $13 for it at the coin show yesterday from one of my favorite dealers.
