Not too uncommon. I think some planchets got melted into the copper bath used for plating them. The added zinc makes the copper bath a brass bath.

Jbuck is correct. It happens sometimes, resulting in a "brassy" color.

You can make new 1 cent coins very gold looking by heating them on a stove at low temperatures! I did that for fun once.
