Looks like a real US $1 gold (1849-1854) which was originally attached to a pin, button, or cuff link resulting in the reverse damage.

I've got an entire set (cuff links, stick pin, necklace, ring, tie bar) made with Buffalo nickels and a Peace dollar (money clip.) All of the coins were polished to a shiny finish, unfortunately. It belonged to my grandfather, and if I ever have occasion to get the jewelry out of the safe I might try to take some pictures for CCF.

A $1 gold set of cuff links might be extravagant but it's not unthinkable :P
