I know it's a sin, thanks. Can an almost pure silver coin have a mint error where it destroys it similar to to this?

@MC, theoretically, if this coin was struck with rusted dies, the surface could be somewhat pitted. However, this coin is either a poorly cast fake (or more likely, a real coin that has been exposed to something which has corroded away some of the silver).

Can't recall ever seeing a Franklin struck from rusted dies.

Yes that is true @cf (and why I said "theoretically"). For the few US coins that have been, aren't the fields somewhat pitted? "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Looks a lot like Ben took a "Dirt Nap" for a few years and was later found and cleaned. I would think it's a metal detector find and not an error. I don't think the mint would use dies that were in this condition to strike a "modern" half dollar.

Well the weight is probably a bit low if it was acid or acidic soil. But it would be a silver melt coin for sure.

I went to the pawn shop a bought any really ugly, smaller or larger than normal coin they had...all scrap. Eventually I hope to end up with something overlooked, if not I have silver. I have 3 messed up quarters and a couple buffaloes I'll post later
