Looks like a real incomplete planchet, but I see no DDO.

Note a doubled die. What are you seeing that makes you think that?

It does look like a straight clip. The weakness of the '5' was the clincher for me. The marks on the reverse rim were a distraction to me, making me think it was a damaged coin. Then I spotted the '5'.

Very nice clip. For doubling, maybe a tiny smidge of MD on the number 6 in the date?

That was the way they looked that year. Keep in mind that the master hub was swelling outwards at that time. Even then the devices were touching the rim. When the master hub starts swelling, then it enlarges the size of the devices. Note on the 1968 cent and the new master hub in 1969, see how much the design had swollen from this event:

Note the size of the heads on these two different examples. (Before/after the master hub was replaced) When the quarters were showing the same issue, the master hub swelling, then in 1983 they made a new master hub. Size by side you see the same thing:

On the 1982 Large and small date cents, the same event happened, but they changed it part way through the year:

Again you note the difference of the sizes of the devices and the head was also larger. So where am I going with this? I experimented with a small date and used Photoshop to create the same illusion. Guess what, it was a match as to what happened:

It created a very close example. The hub swelling and new master hub were the same design, just altered with the distortion of the master hub from swollen VS fresh. The wear of creating a new master die each year, altered the master hub.

CoopHome : Swollen master hubs enlarges the design.
