I just picked up an 1854 Braided Hair Lg Cent with a major, obvious rotation. Any opinions on whether this amount of rotation is common to this era coin? Does it really add value? Are there good sources for valuing rotation errors?
NGC lists a number of variations in its Varieties Plus without really detailing the differences among them. No photos there show any rotation issues common enough to warrant posting in a subcategory. So, any good links to the Newcomb and Sheldon scales online?
Rotated dies are fairly common on large cents, even when the rotation is greater than 90 degrees. I have seen a few that are nearly in medal orientation.
There is a modest premium for rotated dies, if you find someone who collects rotated dies. Some collectors do not want rotated die coins, especially if they are completing albums, because the rotated die coins look weird in an album. It's the old adage, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." You just need to find the right beholder!
Nice find, though! It sheds light on the minting process and coinage history, and that's always interesting.
