Not often one can find a complete 1888 proof set in original condition these days, but that is exactly what Spink's of London has up for auction in a matter of a couple of weeks.

https://www.spink.com/lot/22888001888

Spink Auction #22888 on September 15, 2022

All coins have been graded by NGC and range from PF64 to PF66. By complete set this includes all the gold pieces too - 13 coins in total.

From Spink: "This is conceivably the last remaining intact set in private hands and matched only by the 'mint fresh' sets held by the American Numismatic Society and Smithsonian Museum, this set accompanied by contemporary custom fitted case of issue embossed in gold Gothic script "John Robert Fletcher", latterly incorporated in a Spink and Son custom case to house the NGC 'Fletcher holders"

That is what I call a WOWIE set of coins. Only $200K to kick off the bidding gang, that is less than half of what it is expected to bring in.

Holy proof sets, Batman!

This is amazing! I'm going to watch this one just for the fun of it. Estimated sale price of $300,000 to $500,000 seems incredible and reasonable at the same time. This is just something I never really thought of as a proof set.

Thanks so much for posting!

I wish the custom Spink case that was created based on the case in the photos to house the coins in their new plastic tombs, and mentioned in the description was included in the photos. I imagine they didn't spare much in expense having the new case built to mimic the old style. It must be pretty big to hold 13 plastic holders too.

Yokozuna - I agree, found it and set up a watch on my calendar, - an item far, far out of my wheelhouse but still a rare and interesting set, looking forward to seeing how strong the market is on this one.

Couple hundred grant is too low for this set, especially in todays' climate of coin mania and inflation. I expect a minimum $1,000,000.

Set should never be broken up.

With aggressive marketing, could well pass the upper estimate of $500k.

Only missing a few for that project, Half Cent, Large Cent, Two Cent Piece, Three Cent Silver, half dime, Twenty Cent Piece, a Seated dollar, Trade dollar, and possibly the Stella $4 gold? (Unless that is counted as a pattern, which I think it should be).

Then there are the Motto and No Motto Seated coinage varieties, the Bust coinage would be tough to get, bust dime, quarter and half in proof would be expensive as well as other varieties of proof gold, am I missing any of the top of my head for other proof 18th century coinage? Not counting the Stella (pattern) or Motto varieties, that's only 8 more coins, doable I think.
