Hi, I came across this 1981 20 CENTS COIN with VERTICAL DASH between R & A of AUSTRALIA i.e. it reads AUSTR'ALIA while going through many of my 1981 20c coins. Is this considered as a 'Variety' or just another common 1981 20c coin.

Hi ninhao, the coin is fairly beat up from circulation, and the lighting is too intense, so it's hard to distinguish from the other dings and gouges. Is the mark incuse (sunken in) or relief (raised up)?
From these shots it looks like PMD

Hi ttkoo, Thanks for your comment. I take another shot of this 20c coin under natural light. The coin is certainly fairly beat up from circulation. It appears to be as what you have described as PMD (Post Mint Damaged). Under the natural light, the mark is incuse, while under bright light it appears to be relief.

In conclusion this is just a common 1981 20c coin. I must say though it was fun of going through the process of the so called 'treasure hunt'. Thanks again. Have a good day.

Good for a newbie to have a few Aussie friends around you, in an
international environment, such as the CCF.

Different lighting angles of 'dash' make it appear to be impact damage.
