Obverse lll28- base of 2 filled in on some specimens.

"...and the obverse sports a doubled profile and filled base of the 2 in the date."

so one sentence says 'on some specimens' but the other sentence alludes to all specimens.

i just checked my coin's obverse for doubling of the profile and it's there, just no filled 2. hmmm...

update:

i just now posted this coin on VAMworld, along with a lot of coin babble & pictures. now I wait for responses. I'm still sort of making my way around that site when I'm able to. so much reading...

2nd update:

discussion about the coin is ongoing. one other member suggested the possibility of it being a discovery coin, warranting a new VAM designation. the same member also said if it's not a discovery, it is an LDS of the 15A. no verdict yet. waiting.

3rd and probably final update:

with the help of several other VAMmers at VAMworld, I believe what I have here is a VAM-15A pressed over a cracked planchet. what are the odds of a VAM variety like a die break being minted on a flawed planchet? pretty wild. I didn't know what a cracked planchet was until today. so, this puzzle might be solved.

someone suggested a cracked planchet, so I had to investigate it because I'm not sure i'd ever heard of a cracked planchet before. upon closer investigation, the numerous cracks are indeed incuse, aside from that E DO break. that solves the mystery of the triangular-shaped feature above the E. that puzzled me. if it were a die crack or break, there'd be extra metal oozed up over the surface. it looks more like a chip out of the planchet that has filled with grime over the years.

this case may be closed.
