Found this afternoon

It looks like a valid clipped planchet.

Opinions welcomed!

Isn't there supposed to be a "blakely" effect opposite the clip? I don't see one or am I missing it ?

Existence of the Blakesley effect on a clip is a good sign it is authentic, however, its absence is not reason enough alone to call it a forgery.

Sometimes the Blakesley effect is only noticed on one side. The obverse rim looks weaker and wider about 1:00 on the coin above. Looks genuine to me. Nice find.

With 1971 and surrounding years the rim is usually very strong and any slight weakness may be unnoticeable.

I see no problem with this one being genuine.

So how do you tell someone didn't just use tin snips or a chisel on it if there is no blake effect?

One way to tell is near the clip itself. The rim & devices start fading before it gets to the clip. On a fake the rim & devices are fully formed and they look cut off instead of fading like the coin above does.
