the holder has a crack--should I break the coins out and put in 2x2 snaplocks--also the dime has some crud on the reverse--opinions--thanks--

Probably, it depends on your goal.

I cracked all my proof sets in the early 1990s and moved the coins to their respective Dansco albums.

if you have albums to place them into, then crack it out.

Maybe try to find an uncracked jewel case to replace this one on ebay.

If y9o ulike the holder just buy a similar inexpensive set and swap the coins out. Personally I like the look of these older sets. Maybe b/c the first proof set I ever saw was when my grandfather pordred some 1973 sets. They got to my house (he always shipped things like this to my house) so I could see them. But I waited and took the box to his place so we could open them together. The thrill of seeing those "perfect" coins (what they were marketed as) was an experience I won't forget.

Those old cases were sealed and they will receive damage when opened. I know this from personal experience.

If there is a way to open it clean, I am sure the seller would expect to be paid for that skill. Better to just buy a new set.
