Hello all!  I'm wondering if anyone could do a photo grading of this coin? I believe it is a large motto version. I realize it isn't perfect pictures, so a rough estimate is cool with me if you can't be sure. Thanks guys! --Moved to Classic US Coin Grading forum  |

You are correct it is a large motto type. I would give it a G4 based on the pictures

Thanks guys. I didn't think it would grade very high. It's too bad. Guess I'll just have to strive for a little better grade coin.

From our CCF "Coin Facts": http://www.coincommunity.com/us_coin_facts/Two Cent Piece General Grading StandardsG4 Good- At least IN GOD visible. VG8 Very Good- WE weakly visible. F12 Fine- Complete motto visible. WE weak. EF40 Extremely Fine- WE is bold. AU50 About Uncirculated- Leaf tips, arrow points, and the word WE show trace of wear. MS60 Uncirculated- No trace of wear. Light blemishes. MS63 Select Uncirculated- Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Luster may be impaired. From the above Grading Criteria, I'm going with AG-3. For just about any US coin made since 1837 I look at the rim to decide about Good vs. About Good. If the rim is complete on both sides the coin will usually make G-4. If the rims are blended into the fields and/or legends at any point on obverse or reverse then AG-3 is the default grade. The obverse rim on this coin is basically missing in action from 9:00 to 11:00 which would drop it into the AG category IMO. On the bright side, it's a strong AG!  |

Check the strike. The missing rim I don't think is due to wear. Rim is strong on the rev where it is weak on the Obv. I will stick with my G4 I believe the lack of rim is more to do with a strike issues than actual wear on the coin. Yes it is worn but the remaining shield details and the pattern of wear makes me think its a strike/planchet issue.

Either way, it's on the low end of the scale. Does anyone else see the wear on a coin and think about how many people must have handled it? To me that is almost as exciting than a perfect coin. Who knows? It could've passed through someone really important in history! Thanks for the input guys. |
