When I checked for auction history of ebay, Heritage and David Lawrence I only found that was even remotely "recent", and even at that it was over two year old. It sold for $862.50

http://www.davidlawrence.com/invent...lotid/411833

The 2011 RedBook shows VF20 priced at $600, but RedBook values are often way off.

Mine is a PCGS certified VF25 and I got it for $784.74. Due to limited data available I kind of took a shot in the dark on this one. I was willing to throw the dice because problem free copper from the 1700's is tough to find, plus I had a 10% off ebay coupon - so my out the door price was actually $706. I'm figuring at best I got a good deal and at worst I slightly overpaid, which I can live with.

So what do you think?

I can't intelligently comment on the value, but I can say, "wow! nice looking coin!"

Wow .....

That is a lovely coin and one that I would be thrilled to have in my collection.

I offer no expertise on the 'value' .... but offer all my best enthusiasm for seeing such a great old copper.

Beautiful indeed.

I think the coin is almost XF for detail, but they bumped it down due to very slight graininess in certain areas. I think you did pretty well if you're looking at this for a type set coin.

Shadow, I've considered cracking it out because it would be a great hole filler for my Dansco type album. But this one I think I'll leave in the PCGS holder. It's my first 1700's coin so I'm going to have it as a standalone.

I'll stick a more common date in that hole, like maybe an 1803.
Rest in Peace

Makes sense, and I was thinking the same thing for my type set...

I'm very picky about what goes in there and I've had a hard time with the two earlier large cents and the Seated Liberty dollar slots.

I agree the coin was probably "net-graded" a notch due to very slight porosity over high points of Liberty's hair. It's still a great-looking coin and early copper doesn't come cheap. I don't expect you'll have too many second thoughts about this one.

I went with a 1803 Large Cent and 1804 Half Cent for my 7070 album. They are allot easier to find in problem free condition

bherring1964, thank you for that! And thanks to the rest of you for your comments as well.

Where did you get that wealth of auction data? I go directly to ebay, Heritage and David Lawrence and search their archives... and you found way more than I did.

PCGS CoinFacts lists all available public auctions for all U.S. Coins. The list I posted was filtered by: 1798 Draped Bust Large Cents, 2nd Hair Style, 2010, PCGS, and VF. There were 7 public auction records available based on those critieria. It's a great tool. Let me know if you want more records. PCGS gave me a one year free membership to CoinFacts too - so I like it! I think it's about $100/yr to get CoinFacts.

Ah! So you have to be a member? Thanks, I appreciate that. I'll PM you the next time I want to look something up if I'm having problems searching manually.
