Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum, and looking for some help confirming what I have here. I've only been able to find limited info online, and hope that some of the experts might be able to chime in.

I recently acquired this piece from a family member. It's dated 1960. On the side with the "cross", the center has XXX over DUCAT. From the limited info I've gathered, would I be correct in saying the XXX is a denomination of 30 or 3.xx oz of gold?

I'm just looking for any information on this piece, and a possible value if any, other than it's weight in gold. I don't have any intention of getting rid of it, but I just know nothing about it and hope to gain some knowledge on it. Thanks, -Marc

These are privately issued "coins", not official government coinage. Still, they're solid gold, so by no means are they rubbish. I understand that the son of the original issuer in Germany will still make them to order, so I don;t think they're not worth more than bullion value. The small "980" below the bottom arm of the cross is the fineness: .980 fine. It should weigh 103.5 grams and contain 3.261 ounces of gold - that's $5426 at the current gold price.

They're listed in the "Unusual World Coins" catalogue, and on the NGC World Coin database, under "Germany - Federal Republic". Yours is strangely missing from the NGC database, but here's the one from the previous year.

There are collectors for these pieces that will pay above spot price... sometimes considerably above spot price.

I have lucked out on a few of these pieces at spot. The, uhm, rarified(for lack of a better term) collectors of these pieces oft refer to this site VVV

... although in German, 'tis close enough to English to figure out the site navigation in the left column(s). There are numerous fakes(some good, some with obvious/purposeful(?) flaws) that are also listed. I would consider this site to be the most comprehensive on these pieces. There are the silver pieces as well.
