i have acquired a coin in a box from my mother,it may be British on the front is a crest with a crown on the top a lion in the middle and what looks like water lines under the lion. on the reverse it looks like a victory v with a circle on each of the v lines I believe it is stamped 1702 I cannot find any information on this coin please help me. thank you

It sounds like a Dutch East Indies coin,VOC, (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie). There are so many varieties that before we can narrow it down.

i think you are correct it may be Netherlands however I cannot go back to 1702 I only see searches from 1745 nothing older. thank you

The date on your coin is "1792", not "1702". The coat of arms, with the lion half-submerged in water, is that of the province of Zeeland.

1792 was the last year of issue for this type; it's slightly scarcer than average. NGC lookup page.
