It appears to me that the Comic Art Series has been less than successful (I'm talking about the gold coins for the purpose of this discussion).
I see the first mint report for the gold Supergirl shows sales at 394 coins.
I don't know if they can legally do this, but what if the mint decided to end sales of the gold Supergirl coin right now, thereby creating an instant rarity? Do you think that would spur sales of future Comic Art releases specifically, and commemorative coin releases in general as collectors might now fear being shut out of a future "instant rarity?"

My take on human nature says yes. My knowledge on the price of gold says... maybe?

I might actually like to collect the (silver) series if medals were more affordable.

FIFA gold coin sales are not much better. @jbuck nailed the answer.

That said, no matter how much they cost, I would not buy them. I wish the mint stuck to making great collector coins and better circulating coins.

I do not mind the Mint creating medals. I really do like the Liberty medal series.

With that being said, I am glad the Comic Art is a series of medals. I would highly disapprove if they were being issued as legal tender coins.

Supergirl is $3350 for 1/2 oz gold ($2094 spot), and $400 for 1 oz silver ($59 spot). Well above the FIFA gold coin pricing.

This. This is why I just cannot. For $25 less I can get the diamond field dollar set that is also way overpriced.

THAT is quite a bit of a markup, makes me wonder what the artist charged for their service in creating these monsters.
